Choosing a White Paint for Kitchen Cabinets

3 Tips For Picking White Paint For Cabinets | Celebrating Everyday Life with Jennifer Carroll | www.CelebratingEverydayLife.com

I'm entering the painting phase of my farmhouse kitchen renovation, and today I want to share with you 3 Tips for Selecting White Paint for Kitchen Cabinets. I won't lie, the prospect of painting these cabinets has me a little nervous. This will be the biggest painting job I've ever tackled. From my research, I've gleaned that painting cabinets is more complex than painting furniture or walls. Despite my trepidation, I'm also pretty excited because I know that this will make a major difference in this room – and I can't wait for that!! I know I want a light, bright kitchen and for me there's no question that I want white cabinets, but if you've ever been to a paint store then you know that there are about a million shades of white. Seriously, a million. So where do you begin?

I get a little dazed and confused looking at that giant wall of paint chips so I tend to avoid starting there. Instead, I first do some research and create a list of colors that intrigue me. This list can be created from colors that I see in the pretty paint brochures or from designer recommended lists I find online. Starting from a top 10 list and working down from that, feels far less intimidating to me than the hundreds of possible options on the paint chip wall. Curious what's on my list?

Now that you have a more focused list, you can begin to narrow it down even more by removing colors that don't have the right undertones for your room. "White" can have gray, yellow, pink, green, blue, you name it…. mixed in and depending on the light (or lack of) in your room, those undertones are going to be strong at times. Think about the other elements in the room and decide what the overall tones are and go with them. For example, if your room is generally cool in it's color tones (lots of gray and blue for example) than you probably wouldn't want a white that has strong yellow undertones since it is going to be fighting a color temperature battle all the time.

Not sure what tones are lurking in the white you like? Look at the paint chip strip to see what the darkest color on it is, this will tell you immediately what is hiding in your white.

Once you have a color you really like, get a sample and try it on your wall. Live with it for a couple of days and look at it in all different lights. Do you like how it looks in the morning, afternoon, and evening? If not, what is it that is bothering you? Is it too creamy? Too stark? This will help you choose a paint that fits your space and won't have you pulling out your hair. Trust me, the money and especially the hours you are going to spend on this project warrant this type of color testing if you truly aren't sure what to choose.

So what did I choose? White Dove! This color has a mix of both warm and cool tones – perfect for my room which will also have a little bit of both. It's going to go beautifully with my marble countertops but still work with some of the warm golden tones which will periodically pop up in my decor. I am very excited about it and am actually beginning to look forward to this project. I may not be able to start on it until the weekend but at least now I've got my paint selection made and I am one step closer to getting my dream kitchen! How about you? I hope you feel inspired to find your perfect white paint too! Stay tuned for more updates – I'll try to post a few behind-the-scenes pics on Instagram so please follow me over there.
